Understanding Clients, Accounts, and Contacts

People > Clients separates the client account from the people who work with that client.

Two connected record types

An Account is the client record used to organize the relationship, related cases, pricing, and billing context. A Contact is an individual associated with that account, such as the person requesting work or receiving case communications. One account can have several contacts.

A practical example

A client organization has two representatives who send assignments. Create one account for the organization and a contact for each representative. When entering a case, select the account and the appropriate contact for that particular matter. This keeps the company's work together while identifying the person responsible for each request.

How the records connect

Account โ†’ associated contacts โ†’ related cases and invoices. The account provides the client relationship and pricing context. The contact identifies a person. Case and invoice relationships determine what appears in their related-record tabs.

A contact is not automatically a user

Saving a contact does not create a login or grant case access. An authorized administrator must use System Access to set up client access separately. Employees and vendor investigators belong in Staff rather than client contacts.
