Reviewing Case Financial Summaries and Budgets

Use Finances > Financial Summary for the case’s financial position and the Budget tab for authorized limits.

Read the financial summary

  • Total Retainer: retained client funds for the case.
  • Unpaid Invoices: outstanding invoice count and balance.
  • Total Invoiced: the amount invoiced.
  • Invoice history: individual invoices and their payment or overdue information.

Open individual invoices or retainer history when you need to explain a total. A summary is not a substitute for reviewing the underlying transactions.

Compare with the budget

The Budget tab tracks the authorized financial or time allowance and its usage. Budget limits are distinct from retained funds, amounts invoiced, and staff payments. A client may have funds on account while the case is still at its authorized work limit.

When a limit blocks work

Budget rules can warn or block an action. A hard cap can prevent approval. Review the entries for errors and have an authorized user assess any legitimate budget change; Modify Case Budget permission is required to change the budget.

Investigate a difference

Compare the same case and period, inspect pending versus reviewed entries, and check invoice and payment links. A staff cost total and a client invoice total can differ because pay rates and billing rates serve different purposes. The Budgets topic provides the detailed budget workflow.

Access and availability

The controls you see depend on your permissions, access to the case, the case status, and the entry's review, invoice, and payment state. If an action is missing, ask your CaseWyze administrator to check these conditions.
