How Case Types Control Budget Fields

The selected case type controls which budget dimensions are available and whether a budget is required during case creation.

Budget strategies

  • Hours and Money: enables both hours and monetary limits.
  • Hours Only: enables hours and hides monetary budget fields.
  • Money Only: enables monetary limits and hides hours.
  • Disabled: disables case budget tracking for that type.

Required budgets

A case type can require budget values when creating cases. Complete the fields requested by the selected type before submitting the case.

Administrator setup

  1. Open Settings > Case Types.
  2. Edit the appropriate type.
  3. Review Budget Configuration, including the strategy and requirement.
  4. Save and verify the intended behavior.

Managing case types requires Full Access and Manage Settings. Changing a shared case type can affect other cases using that configuration.

Changing a case's type

Review warnings about incompatible budgets, services, and due dates before saving a different type. A case type cannot be changed once billing has started.

Disabled is different from unset

No budget set means the case has no configured allowance. Budgets disabled means its case type does not use that tracking. Neither state should be interpreted as business approval for unlimited work.
