Configuring Case Types and Their Defaults

Open Settings > Case Types. This area requires Full Access and Manage Settings.

Case types define reusable categories and the defaults and choices offered for those cases. Select Add Case Type or edit an existing type.

Identity

  • Name: the category users select.
  • Tag: a required two-to-four-character code that can be used in case numbering.
  • Description and Color: internal guidance and visual identification.
  • Active: whether the type is available for use.
  • Reference Labels 1–3: names for reference fields, such as Claim Number or SIU Number.

Budget and due-date rules

Budget Strategy offers Hours and Money, Hours Only, Money Only, or Disabled. Enable Budget is required when creating cases if the applicable values must be provided. These are work-authorization limits, separate from client payment.

Default Due Date supplies days from creation; leave it blank for no default. The separate required-due-date option prevents saving a new case without a due date.

Allowed choices

Choose Allowed Services, Allowed Subject Types, a Default Subject Type, and Report Templates. No services selected means all active services are allowed; no subject types selected means all subject types are allowed; no report templates selected means all active templates are allowed.

Allow on public case request form controls public-intake availability alongside form settings.

Save and verify

Save the type and inspect a new-case form and report choices. Changing an existing case's type can affect budgets, services, and due dates; the case type becomes locked once billing has started.
